J. DAVID WILLIAMS
A graduate of UCLA’s MBA program, Mr. Williams began his career
as a Production Assistant at Columbia Pictures. Subsequently he worked
as a Producer’s Assistant with Aaron Spelling Productions, working
on programs such as The Love Boat and Hart to Hart.
Subsequent to his tenure at Spelling he left to become a Senior Production
Analyst at Twentieth Century-Fox Television, where he was then
promoted to work as the Vice-President of Network Relations.
Rising rapidly in the TV industry, Mr. Williams went to work at Glen A. Larson Productions, quickly becoming the Director of Operations and Business Affairs for the company. In this position he assisted in the production and syndication of such programs as Magnum, P.I., The Fall Guy, Knight Rider and The Highwayman.
In the motion picture business Mr. Williams helped to secure funding for several low budget films including the very successful films Valley Girl and Teen Wolf, both for Atlantic Releasing Corporation. Additional small films that he has arranged financing for include Fire Base Gloria, Red Scorpion, Prey of the Chameleon, Defenseless, Slaughter of the Innocents, We’re No Angels and Bodies Rest & Motion.
Moving on to more major releases, Mr. Williams continued his career, assisting in the financing for feature films as the Vice-President of Film Finance for Credit Lyonnais Bank, N.A. Eventually he rose to assume the position of Managing Director for U.S. Operations for the Bank. While in this position he arranged financing for such major motion pictures as Platoon, Salvador, Hoosiers, the River’s Edge, The Last Emperor and many more. His work engaged him in the structuring of financial participation deals with several of the mini-majors and mainline studios such as Paramount, Tri-star, New Line, Carolco, Twentieth Century-Fox and Columbia.
In 1986 Mr. Williams formed FilmCrest, Inc., which produced films such as Happy Birthday Hollywood and One Hundred Years of Hollywood Music, along with Ronald J. Fields, a multi-Emmy award winning writer and the grandson of W.C. Fields. FilmCrest has been involved in motion picture |
and television financing and production as well as various other prints and advertising and distribution investments. FilmCrest has participated in the financial structuring of several studio motion pictures, through Star Partners, P&A Partners I, II and III and P&A Principals I and II as well as the New Millennium Fund. FilmCrest has participated in such great films as Rainman, A Fish Called Wanda, Glory, Edward Scissorhands, My Stepmother’s an Alien, Defenseless, Lawnmowerman, Glengarry Glen Ross, Fern Gully, True Romance, Peter’s Friends and Much Ado About Nothing.
From 1994 to 1996 Mr. Williams acted as the Chief Operating Officer for Orion Pictures, overseeing the successful distribution of twelve films that had been previously lying dormant in the Orion library. The most notable of these was Blue Sky, which earned an Academy Award for Jessica Lang. Upon the sale of Orion to MGM, Mr. Williams started Legacy Releasing. As Chairman of Legacy he oversaw the release of over 47 films including Once Upon a Time When I was Colored, Shiloh, Oliver Stone’s Killer, A Journal of Murder, Pippi Longstocking, The Swan Princess, Rudolph the Rednosed Reindeer and many more. He also formed and acted as President of Providence Entertainment, which was declared the number two independent theatrical distribution company of 1999 by both the Hollywood Reporter and Variety.
Most recently Mr. Williams owns and runs FilmCrest Corporation, an independent entertainment venture capital company specializing in prints and advertising (P&A) financing. Recently FilmCrest has provided the initial P&A funding for Mel Gibson’s The Passion and Miramax’s The Aviator. He has also acquired Constellation Entertainment, a new worldwide distribution and rights management company that distributes and manages the media rights of quality films targeted to underserved audiences through its niche labels such as American Family Movies and Legacy releasing, while building a valuable library for future distribution.
